How do I install Ultimento?

You’re just 60 seconds away from having Ultimento installed! Let’s get to it.


First, let’s make sure you know about the requirements – all you need is the free Magento platform installed and an FTP access:

  1. Magento Free Community Edition version 1.4.x, 1.5.x, or 1.6.x (clean install).
    We recommend the latest stable release which you can download here. Please refer to Magento’s installation instructions on how to install Magento properly.
  2. FTP access to the root folder of your Magento installation.
    You can use any free FTP software.
  3. If you want sample data, please download this from Magento’s own site and follow the instructions here.


Never do anything directly on a live store. First setup and test on a development domain (i.e. “”).

Temporarily disable Magento cache

To avoid any possible issues with the installation we recommend disabling Magento cache before proceeding with the installation and re-enabling it once the install is complete (60 seconds later :) ).

  1. Log in to your Magento admin
  2. Access System > Cache Management
  3. Click on “Select All” and in the “Actions” drop down select “Disable”
  4. Click on “Submit” and once the page reloads log out of the admin
If you have the Magento compilation enabled, remember to disable it before proceeding.

Upload Ultimento files

Using your favorite FTP client, upload all files and folders inside the folder “ultimento” (which is inside the folder “ultimento-2.x.x”) to the root folder of your Magento installation. Just to be clear, that means that you’ll be uploading the following 3 folders and their content:

  1. app
  2. js
  3. skin

We recommend you do one folder at a time. This will merge the Ultimento files into your Magento installation. You will be asked to overwrite boxess.css which you have to do.

1-click installer

  1. In your Magento admin under CMS > Pages delete any “home” page you may have (or rename the identifier to something else).
  2. Go to Ultimento > Installer and select the Store View where you want to install Ultimento (this is relevant only if you have more than 1 store view)
  3. Click “Install Now” and wait until the page reloads and displays the confirmation message.
That’s it! You are good to go with Ultimento! All that’s left is validating your copy ;) – see below.

Validate your copy of Ultimento:

  1. In your Magento admin, click on Ultimento > Settings
  2. On the upper left corner, under “Current Configuration Scope” select your store view (lowest scope level)
  3. Under “Ultimento serial” un-check the “use website” check-box and enter your unique serial code that was sent to your email and click on “Save Config”
To avoid any potential problems save your serial under the “Default Config” scope as well.


If you are experiencing a problem or get an error message in the Magento admin, that means you didn’t carefully follow the installation instructions ;) . You may have missed a step or overlooked something – go through this checklist to double check:

It could be the cache…

  1. Make sure you have the Magento compilation disabled under “System > Tools > Compilation”
  2. Refresh all Magento cache and re-index all data (it may not be enough to have the cache disabled)
  3. Log out of the admin and log  back in

It could be an issue with the serial number…

  1. Double check that your Ultimento serial is correct for your Base URL
  2. Make sure you saved your serial number under the correct store view scope.

    Hi Noam,

    The default theme is still on the home page and the white theme appears only in product page

    Also I tried to change the logo by Uploading a separate image for the logo as described in the newest version 1.4 ( I have upgraded to 1.4) but the my logo still does not appear , the ultimento logo 1 dissapeared but still there is the Ultimento logo part 2

    Please let me know

      Hi Achilles – it seems that you either didn’t upload all the files properly or it could also be a cache issue. So make sure all the files are properly uploaded (you can use any file comparison software) and refresh your Magento cache.

      If you’re still experiencing problems go ahead and open a ticket via your account center with your Magento admin and FTP info and we’ll take a look ;) .

    Please validate for our license. We have 2 domains for our account, which was our dev, and We transferred to this morning and the serial number is not working.

    Ive cleared and refreshed cache, ive logged out and back in, i still get this:It looks like Ultimento isn’t properly setup at “default”! Make sure all the files are uploaded and make sure your serial is correct for this storeview.

    but i do not get the verify serial link like before. Template still isnt showing, pls advise

      Hmmmm weird… send me your full FTP and Magento admin info via the helpdesk in your account center and I’ll take a look.

  5. Hi.

    I want to test this theme at, but i get “It looks like Ultimento’s serial is not correct for ‘dansk’. Fix it to enable Ultimento on ‘dansk’.” after entering the serial.

    What´s wrong?

      Hi Smykker – that URL is not licensed for Ultimento so it’s normal that it returns an error. Make sure to check the troubleshooting section ;) . What I did for you is change the URL in your license to your test URL so now it will work right away. Just re-save the serial over under your store view scope and logout/log back in the admin if necessary.

    Now i got it working in the backend, but the frontend, gives me this error:

    There has been an error processing your request

    Exception printing is disabled by default for security reasons.

    I dont have any idea what this means

      Hi Smykker – which version of Magento are you running? 1.4 (1.4.1,, 1.4.2) or 1.5 (, 1.5.1)? Did you make sure to use the correct Ultimento edition for your Magento version?

      If you’re still having problems go ahead and open a new ticket from your account center with your Magento admin and FTP info and we’ll take a look for you.

    Can’t find the serial for my order.

      Hi Ricco – the serial is sent instantaneously when the order is placed. It’s in the same email with your order confirmation. Most likely you overlooked it or it went to your spam folder. Make sure to add addresses to your email safe list so that our emails don’t go to spam.

      If you still can’t find your serial please open a request via your account center and we’ll send it to you right away ;) . The Magento theme won’t work without the serial.

    Hi Noam – I refreshed all caches and retried to access ultimento menu and now it’s OK.

    Now, second issue : I get this message “It looks like Ultimento’s serial is not correct for ‘default’. Fix it to enable Ultimento on ‘default’.” when I copy the key I received via email. And nothing change on my home page…

      Assuming your serial and Base URL are correct, make sure you are saving the serial under the storeview scope level which you need to select on the upper left corner (lowest scope). Un-check the “use website” check-box and save the config.

      Let me know if the error in the Magento admin is still there.

    I believe I followed all of the theme install instructions, but when I look at the front page, all I get is 404 error.

    How should I go about troubleshooting that?

      Hi Don – hmmm that’s weird. Never heard of that before. Are you sure you followed the installation instructions carefully? Including refreshing all Magento cache and re-indexing all data?

    Hello, is there any way of installing this onto a magento install that has already been slightly modified? Or does it need to be a completely fresh install?

      Hi Frederick – yes definitely. Ultimento won’t overwrite anything on your store. The auto-installer will disable your home CMS page but you can easily re-enable it after the install (and disable Ultimento’s home page).

      Of course make sure to backup everything before doing anything ;) .

    The demo site seems to state that the demo products should pre-loaded when it is installed. But I don’t see the demo products. Is there a separate installer for that?

      Hi John – Ultimento’s installer doesn’t touch the catalog in anyway whatsoever so I don’t think your issue is related to that. Same with the Magento themes and Magento extensions that are built-in Ultimento.

      Are your products showing up if you switch from Ultimento to the default Magento theme?? Either way feel free to send me your FTP and Magento admin info via the help desk in your account center and we can take a look.

    Hi, I’ve followed the installation procedure and successfully inputted the serial code. My store front-end is still using the demo theme and not ultimento though. The ultimento content is showing but the template and skin files are still using the magento default theme. Are there any further configuration settings I need to make, or anything else I need to do. Please help? Thanks

    Hi does this have to be a fresh clean install or can I make Ultimento apply to my existing shop and products ?

      Hi Paul – no it doesn’t have to be a clean install ;) :

      Ultimento’s 1-click installer will NOT overwrite anything so you can safely install it on an existing Magento installation. Also the dummy catalog is NOT automatically installed (of course) so no worries there! One thing to watch though is that your current home page may be set as “disabled” by the installer so that it can create the Ultimento home page. But your data is safe and won’t be overwritten. You can easily re-enabled your previous CMS home page in the Magento admin.

    Hi Noam, I’ve uploaded Ultimento and refreshed my cache but when I log into Magento Admin I dont get an Ultimento menu to start the 1 click installer.
    Can you help please?

      Hi Noam, my host solved the above issue for me but now I realise I need to change my URL (to put dev in front of the URL listed with you currently) to active my Ultimento serial number.

    I keep getting this error message at the top. I click on refresh in the cache management. BUT it continues to pop up…

    One or more of the Cache Types are invalidated: Blocks HTML output. Click here to go to Cache Management and refresh cache types.

    What do I do?
    2nd Question: How do I get my products to come up in the home page like in your demo?

  23. Can’t log into my account. It says my email doesn’t exist. I received all my email at that email address. I just need my account reactived. My Ultimento order # 500000487. Thanks

      Your email is correct and your account is active so I’m assuming you either made a typo when trying to login or your password may be incorrect. I just reset your password so please look for an email from us with your new credentials (if you don’t see it check your spam folder and add our domain name to your email’s safe list).

    Hello everyone,

    I’m installing the Ultimento template on Magento hosted a local server. I’m using Mac, so when I copy and paste the Ultimento files over the Magento files using Finder they dont “Merge”, they obliterate the original Magento folders.

    I’ve been looking for a quick solution to this for about an hour now. Any suggestions?

      Hi Miguel – for sure I have a suggestion ;) . It’s yet another reason why you shouldn’t work locally with Magento.

      The Magento platform just doesn’t play well locally and you’ll end up wasting countless hours on stupid things. From installation and configuration to catalog setup and migration to your live environment, it’s just not the same locally as it is on a live server.

      It’s much better to run a development Magento store in parallel with your production store – both on actual live servers that have identical specs.
