I installed Ultimento but my store still uses the default theme – why?
If you followed the installation instructions to install Ultimento with the 1-click auto-installer there should be no problem. And the huge majority of our customers never experience any issues. But you may have missed a step or overlooked something. Also, even though it’s extremely rare, it can happen that the auto-installer script got interrupted during the installation process (server glitch, cache issue, and what not).
So if after installing Ultimento your Magento store’s frontend is still using the default Magento theme, or if it keeps reverting to the default theme no matter what you do in the Magento admin, follow these steps:
Is it a license issue?
If you got an warning message in the Magento admin saying that your serial isn’t correct, double check the following:
1. Is my store’s Base URL properly licensed for Ultimento?
These 2 URLS need to match:
- Your Magento store’s Base URL which you can check under
System > Configuration > Web > Unsecure > Base URL - The URL you submitted when you placed your Ultimento order
If these URLs aren’t exactly the same, you can always request to change your licensed URL(s).
2. Is my serial saved under the correct configuration scopes?
When you validate your copy of Ultimento make sure to save the serial both under the “Default Config” scope and under your Store View scope. In other words, follow these steps:
- In your Magento admin, click on
Ultimento > Settings - Under “Ultimento serial” enter your unique serial code that was sent to your email and click on “Save Config”
- On the upper left corner, under “Current Configuration Scope” select your store view (lowest scope level)
- Open the “Ultimento serial” tab and just hit “Save Config” again
3. Is my serial number correct?
It goes without saying but of course double check that your serial number is correct and that you didn’t paste in incorrectly or added extra space
.
Is the design configuration correct?
It’s rare but sometimes your Magento design configuration may have been manually set in a way that interferes with Ultimento so check the following:
1. Is Magento’s theme configuration correct?
Let’s check that your installation is actually calling the correct Magento theme:
- In your Magento admin navigate to
System > Configuration > Design > Themes - On the upper left corner, under “Current Configuration Scope” select your store view (lowest scope level)
- In the “Default” field you should have “ultimento” and in the “Templates”, “Skin (Images / CSS)”, and “Layout” fields you should have either “ultimento” or one of Ultimento’s color schemes (i.e. “ultimentowhite”, “ultimentoblue”, etc)
2. Is there a design change that’s overwriting the theme configuration?
Magento’s “Design Change” functionality takes priority over the theme configuration (which is useful if you want to run a temporary design change on your store if you run a special promotion or for a holiday). Let’s make sure it’s not set there to the default Magento theme:
- In your Magento backend navigate to
System > Design. - If you see a design change that forces the “default/default” theme click on it and hit “Delete”.
If there are several design changes (for example one applied to a Store View and one applied to the Default Config) make sure to delete them all!
The probability of you having to run through these troubleshooting steps is near zero
. Still though we wanted to cover all the possible factors that may be causing your Magento installation to pull the default theme instead of Ultimento’s Magento themes.

Noam,
Have now got Ultimento installed on the Magento platform at HostGator. The theme I purchased was the Pet store so I have the source files to install now. As helpful as HostGator has been with this install, I want to know where these files need to reside when they are uploaded. Thanks for your help!
Heather S.
Hi Heather – not sure what you mean by “the pet store” as Ultimento doesn’t have such a theme. But I’m glad to hear you got Ultimento installed properly
.
All good and still have the issue. See info below:

Hi, I have logged an issue a couple of days ago through the account centre, but have not had any reply as yet. On first install everything seemed to work, but on adding items to the product catalog, the theme seems be have gotten affected. It is now showing the default theme with some Ultimento parts on it. I uninstalled Ultimento, re-uploaded the files, re-installed, and still have same problem. When I log in to admin, it says that Ultimento is not installed properly has may have an issue with the serial number for ‘default’, click here to fix it. I click the “click here” link and the message disappears but doesn’t seem to do anything. The problem remains. I also can’t seem to get back to the default theme completely either. It is sort of stuck between the two.
Hi Travis – most likely your issue will be solved by going through the troubleshooting checklist on this post but if you already opened a ticket via the help desk with your Magento admin and FTP info we’ll get back to you ASAP
.
Hi Joel,
We are sorry for the inconvenience, but please try to empty the cache and log in to your account again.

Thanks. I tried that a few times but it made no difference. I also noticed that the ‘powered by ultimento’ keeps coming back – after I’ve deleted it and even changed the setting to ‘use default’. I don’t get it.
Hi, how do I add a second domain? When I bought the Standard to Plus upgrade, I did not get a chance to enter a new domain name.
Thanks,
Sergio
Hi Sergio,
Please submit a request through the account center with the additional domain name you want added.

Hi Noam,
strangely I get a combined Ultitmento and Magento theme when default/default is selected in System > Design.
If I change it to default/ultimentonew the webpage comes out correct. Did I somewhere change something before I installed Ultimento? I checked all of the above and it seems to be correct. (off course I flush all the cash every time also)
the default/default should be my basis so I hope we can change the cluttered webpage it now shows to what it should be.
regards,
Patrick
Hey Patrick,
With Ultimento you generally don’t want to run a “default/default” design because it overwrites a lot of the components of Ultimento itself. If you look at our post on troubleshooting licensing you’ll see its something you want to avoid.
I’m not sure if you’ve done anything to customize the contents of this file, but if not you probably just want to delete it. If that doesn’t work or you’re still having problems open up a ticket and we’ll take a look.

Hi Noam,
NOW I got it! Great thx! I misread your text and thought default/default should be there (I’m Dutch).
delete it and it changed directly.
Still not getting any of the product catagories I made in Magento in the Ultimento page. Any idea where I find the bottleneck there?
thx
grz Patrick
Hey Patrick,
Glad that worked for you. Regarding the product categories, make sure you’re nesting all of your categories (i.e. furniture, electronics, etc.) under the root category in Magneto. This is a Magento function that is necessary to make categories properly relate to one another.
If you’re still having a problem getting these to show up just open up a ticket with your Magento credentials and we’ll take a look.
Thanks,
