How do I update my Ultimento to the latest release?
Ultimento evolves all the time and each new release brings exciting new features and improvements. Since all updates are FREE for life it’s normal to want to update your copy to the latest release! Here’s the ins and outs of the update process.
Basics:
First download the latest Ultimento version.
Then basically all you have to do to update your Ultimento installation to the latest release is to upload the new files on your server, overwriting the files that are there while being very careful to not overwrite any changes you may have made to your installation (customization etc).
Step by step instructions:
Backup everything
It goes without saying… always backup everything before doing anything new!
Temporarily disable Magento cache
To avoid any possible issues with the update we recommend disabling Magento cache. You can re-enabling it once the update is complete.
- Log in to your Magento admin
- Access System > Cache Management
- Click on “Select All” and in the “Actions” drop down select “Disable”
- Click on “Submit” and once the page reloads log out of the admin
Upload the latest files
If you haven’t changed anything to your copy of Ultimento
If you haven’t made any customization to your copy of Ultimento then that part is super simple: just upload the files (overwriting your copy).
If you’ve customized Ultimento “the right way”
If you’re running Ultimento 1.5 or higher and have followed the instructions for customizing the files – then you’re all good! Just upload the files using any FTP tool (overwriting your copy). Your custom changes won’t be overwritten.
All other cases
Otherwise if you have customized any of Ultimento’s core files (i.e. any file that’s not in the “ultimentocustom” folders) you will need to be very careful when uploading the new files so that you include the changes that we’ve made, while at the same time not lose the changes that you have made.
Use a file and folder comparison software. If that sounds frightening, don’t worry. There’s plenty of software and web apps that do that out there. Many of them are free and most of them offer a free trial. Personally, I use Beyond Compare and I find it very easy to use. Go ahead and download it for free.
- Using your file and folder comparison software or app, compare your copy of Ultimento with the new release. So you would compare the root folder of your Magento installation with the “ultimento” folder that’s inside the folder “ultimento-1.x.x”.
- Run the comparison and go through all the files – updating your installation with the new changes that were made to Ultimento and the new files that were added while preserving your own changes.
Log back in the admin
That’s a very important step as this is when all the automatic update commands that need to run on your installation in order to update the core Ultimento product are performed. Just to avoid any possible complications, go to the Ultimento settings page, select the proper Store View Scope and just click on “Save Config” (you don’t have to change any of the values).
Now it’s time to test and play around with the new features. Also remember to re-enable your Magento cache to speed up your installation.

Where can we get the latest download? The customer account says I can only download 1.0.7
Hi Mohawk, we’re working on improving the account center so that the updates will be automatically be made available for download immediately once they’re released. In the meantime please submit a support ticket directly from your Ultimento account page and we’ll reply back with the latest Ultimento version asap.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Hi Noam,
Steps have been followed for the update and everything is working. Only issue, color themes are not responding. All selections show default color.
Jack

.

Noam,
Thanks for your help.
Is the Optimized Checkout Module a separate installation or is it included in the new upgrade? I performed the steps to upgrade to 1.4 and it shows as the Ultimento version in Magento, but I don’t believe the shopping cart looks different, nor do I believe it looks like the demo on the link you sent.
Hi Kathy – here’s all the information on the free Optimized Checkout module.
I already read that as I’ve mentioned in my post. My question is whether I need to do something more than update to 1.4?
Is there a separate installation required to obtain it?
kathy – it’s explained there! You need to follow the steps on how to get the Optimized Checkout extension. It’s explained very clearly but you need to actually read and follow them
.
My checkout page is broken. Seems like the javascript isnt working and the accordion shows nothing. Any suggestions? I just updated thinking that might fix the issue. No luck! Do I need to add the checkout extension to make the accordion work?

Hi Beth – Please don’t post the same query several times or in different places. It won’t make us get back to you sooner! Quite the opposite – it just delays our response time and affects our efforts to provide truly awesome support. When you post your question more than once, it only takes us longer to get back to you. Too many duplicate questions on the wiki pages also create a mess in the documentation which then affects not only you but the other users as well. Thank you for understanding!
Now I’ll go ahead and respond to your help desk ticket
.
Hi Noam,
after I click Once click install” I receive below message.
A page URL key for specified store already exists.
I did a clean install on Magento ver. 1.6.0.0-rc2
regards,
allen
Hi Allen – this error usually occurs if you try to install Ultimento twice. i.e. if Ultimento is already installed on that Store View. Try uninstalling Ultimento with the 1-click un-installer and re-installing it afterwards.
Is this happening after updating Ultimento to a newer version? You don’t need to re-run the installer if that’s the case
.
When uninstalling ultimento and reinstalling it, I get the following error message.
A block identifier with the same properties already exists in the selected store.
How can i fix it?
Hi Zineb – that’s an error message when trying to install Ultimento on a Store View where it’s already installed. Make sure to run the 1-click un-installer before attempting to re-install Ultimento. If you’re still having problems try manually deleting Ultimento’s CMS pages and Static Blocks before running the installer.
Also make sure to clear your Magento cache
.
I hope this helps!
Problem installing Ultimento 2 over 1.5. Disabled cache management and checked compilation was not enabled. Overwrote /app /skin and /js in root directory with new folders. On logging back into the Magento admin, I get the installer page. All 3 folders have 0777 permission. Sure it’s something simple I’ve missed. Thanks
Hi Michael – why did you change the folder permissions? This is probably what messed up your Magento installation and makes it redirect to the Magento installer page. It’s not related to Ultimento (you can delete all the Ultimento files you uploaded to verify that you’ll get the same problem).
Try restoring your installation from a uncorrupted backup with proper native Magento permissions and simply following the instructions
. That should work perfectly at the first try.
I hope this helps!
A misunderstanding I think. I didn’t change the folder permissions I was just letting you know what they were in case it was important. I’ve restored the original /skin /app and /js folders and Magento works fine again with Ultimento 1.5.
From the original install instructions I understand I need to copy /skin /app and /js to the root folder. But what is not clear is where the files in ultimento-source-2.0 should be copied to. That’s where I think the problem lies!
Hi Michael – Ultimento’s source files don’t need to be uploaded
. They are just there to help you customize your store and fully leverage all the assets that come with Ultimento.
To update your installation just follow the instructions on this page – when uploading the files in the app, js, and skin folders make sure to use an FTP tool so that the Ultimento files will be merged with the Magento installation and not completely replace the 3 folders.
Thanks for your help Noam. It’s sorted. The problem was with the folders being replaced rather than over-written.
Noam, Update/Installation was of course straight forward. Under Configuration/General/Installed Noam Design Extensions the Ultimento_Theme is 2.1.0 so I assume 2.1 is installed however I am not seeing any other changes, most notably the Facebook Like addition. Is there a way of checking whether the update installed fully and correctly? Or is there something else that I can check to see why the Facebook Like extension is not showing (either in Admin or Frontend)? The relevant code (at least some of it) is there in template/catalog/product/view.html (lines 128-130). Reverting to the default theme does not deliver the Facebook Like either.
By way of general comment, I have found that, from Australia, this extension delays full loading of the page (need to call to FB’s US based servers) and I have actualy disabled it in our existing live site. We’ll give is another go and see what happens.
Kind regards,
David
Hi David – you do need to have the Facebook Connect extension enabled in order for the Facebook Like button to show up on the product pages. Other than that make sure to flush all Magento cache (including CSS and JavaScript cache), re-index all data, and re-run the Magento compiler if you have that enabled.
Let me know if that doesn’t solve the problem!
Hi Noam,
Same problem for me, I have reindexed and refreshed the cache, but no facebook like button.
regards
Ian
Hi Ian – please see my previous answer and also make sure your “view.phtml” file is up to date
.
I hope this helps!
Noam,
I’m still not getting anything.
Perhaps related to this is that the Facebook Connect function appears not to be working either. Chrome returns the following error:
Fatal error: Call to a member function getBackend() on a non-object in …../magento/app/code/core/Mage/Eav/Model/Entity/Abstract.php on line 816
while IE9 returns just a blank page.
Thanks again,
David
Hi David – did you configure your Facebook App properly as instructed in the documentation for Ultimento’s Magento Facebook Connect extension?
The Facebook Connect extension needs to be enabled and configured for the various features to work properly – including the Facebook Like button.
If you’re still having problems with this after following the instructions carefully and clearing all caches feel free to send us your Magento admin and FTP info via the help desk and we’ll take a look
.
Hello,
Is there a reason why the ultimento site is running at a crawl pace? I’ve been trying to download the latest version for about 2 hours now and cannot get past the login screen. Blog pages take about 2 min to load.
adam
Hi Adam – so sorry about that! Our hosting company was doing some server maintenance late last night but everything should be back to normal now
.
Hi!
That is nice. I have plenty of little customizations so is there some release notes to see what has been upgraded before I do my update?
I have seen we have gone from 2.2 to 2.3
Thanks in advance
Javier
Hi Javier – here’s the best way to update your installation with the latest Ultimento version
.
hi noam
Can you reply Javier question? because me too i want to know what’s new before doing update.
Thanks
Hi Herve – please see my answer just above
.
At this time we don’t have a public change-log but comparing different Ultimento versions with a file & folder comparison tool is the best way to see which files were changed and what was changed exactly. For the CSS files, make sure to compare the included uncompressed versions.
If you run the comparison on your computer it’s a matter of just a few minutes
.
Hello Noam,
Is the CSS updated in this new release? I have customized my CSS and moved it to a custom folder, but I would like to take advantage of any updates. Is there a way to find out what has changed in the CSS without going line by line?
Thanks,
Walter
Yes of course! Just use any file & folder comparison tool to compare the included uncompressed version of the CSS file with your customized one
.
Hope this helps!
Thanks!
Noam,
Have attempted to update from 2.2 to 2.3 but Ultimento_Theme version in Installed Noam Design Extensions is still showing 2.2. I have re-downloaded and uploaded, exactly as per instructions, but still showing 2.2.
Can you please advise other actions to properly effect upgrade to 2.3.
Thanks,
David G
Noam,
exact same issue here as well.
Hi David and Samuel – that’s actually a small glitch in Ultimento 2.3
. The version number wasn’t updated correctly – I’m really sorry about that! This is fixed in Ultimento 2.3.1 which will be available for download tomorrow (no release notes will be published though).
Hello,
I tried to update to ultimento 2.3.1 I followed the instructions as shown above. However I did not get any changes in my website. For instance, the category page only shows the review stars on the first product and I do not have a google plus button on the product view page.
My installed Noam extension tab shows the following information:
[Installed] Mage_BetterAdminNotifications 1.1.0
[Installed] Mage_Installer 2.0.0
[Installed] Mage_Newsletteroptin 1.1.0
[Installed] Mage_Ultcheck 1.3.0
[Installed] Mage_Ultdebate 1.3.0
[Installed] Mage_Ultnotes 2.3.1
[Installed] Ultimento_Theme 2.3.1
Please help how to solve this issue and make sure the upgrade is succesfull
Hi Steinar,
If you’ve already followed the prescribed steps and are still having trouble can you please open up a support ticket in your account? Also, please provide your account login and FTP information so that we can check your installation directly if needed. Remember not to post your credentials on the forum! Definitely not the kind of information you want publicly viewable.
Thanks,
Support
Hey there this is kind of of off topic but I was wondering if
blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code
with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!
Hey Madelaine,
It depends on the software you’re using to blog, but many of the most popular ones like WordPress and Blogger support WYSIWYG editors so you should be set. WYSIWYG editors have become quite popular and even Magento supports the tool for the development of content pages.
Thanks,
Brandon
